Summer Educational Travel 2017 offers experiential learning
Mary Virginia Swain '77C

Travel is proven to broaden the mind, enrich the soul and educate us about new places and other cultures. This summer, Saint Mary's School students enjoyed school sponsored trips to France and the Dominican Republic as well as the Australian Exchange program.

At Saint Mary's School, we believe it is important to offer our students opportunities to expand their horizons and enhance their understanding of the people and places that comprise our exciting and complex world. Designed to provide students with meaningful learning experiences that build on and enrich their Saint Mary's education, the educational travel program offers a range of experiences from which students may choose, including service trips, academic exchanges, cultural excursions and history trips.

This summer, Saint Mary's School students enjoyed school sponsored trips to France and the Dominican Republic as well as the Australian Exchange program.

Six Saint Mary's students and chaperones traveled to France in June as part of the 14th annual exchange program with the Institution des Chartreux in Lyon. Their students visited Saint Mary's during the spring semester and, this summer, our students spent two weeks in France. Chaperones Heather Ramee and Caroline Costello report that the girls enjoyed time with their host families, speaking French, learning to make pastries at In Cuisine in Lyon, tasting amazing cuisine, and exploring the cities of Lyon, Avignon, and Annecy.

A group of Saint Mary's students, accompanied by Director of Student Life and Leadership Programs Katherine Jackson, traveled to the Dominican Republic in June for the Young Women's Leadership Conference.

Rising sophomores Lillian Seck '20 and Lane Russell '20 are participating in the Australian Educational Exchange program, attending St Mary's Anglican Girls' School in Karrinyup, Perth, Australia. Students from the Australian St Mary's, Charlotte Hill and Madison Seth, will attend Saint Mary's School in Raleigh the first five weeks of our school year.

Many students traveled the state, the country, and the world independently this summer, from camps in North Carolina to Scotland to Myanmar to Ecuador and beyond.
