Coaches Bios

 

Darryl Buda | Assistant Varsity Swimming

Darryl Buda joins the SMS swim program this year, serving as Assistant Coach. He has been coaching with the Marlins of Raleigh year-round swim team since December, 2008.  Buda grew up swimming in Raleigh for the Tarheel Aqua Racers and graduated from UNC-Wilmington with a BA in Psychology.  Along with his regular duties, Buda also serves as lead coach for the MOR seasonal programs.  He is an avid surfer and enjoys playing ice hockey.

Ami Cammarota | Head JV Lacrosse

Coach Cammarota joins the JV lacrosse program for her third season. She is a 2000 graduate of Hobart and William Smith where she was a NCAA Field Hockey All-American for three of her four years. She lives on-campus with her husband Stefano and their two children, Noah (4) and Lila (1).

Mary Cockrill | Head Varsity Tennis

Coach Mary comes to Saint Mary’s from Cardinal Gibbons where she was the head coach for the JV girls’ tennis team and associate varsity tennis coach for both the girls and boys teams. She began at Cardinal Gibbons as assistant development director. As a fan of athletics at the school, she took on the sports concession stands for 11 years before her enthusiasm for tennis led her to coaching tennis.  Mary played high school tennis and has competed in USTA, Triangle Tennis and World Team Tennis leagues in Raleigh, playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles. A tennis player since early childhood, Mary continues to play competitively with the USTA.

Alisa Wright Colopy | Head Varsity Cross Country, Winter Conditioning, Head Varsity Track & Field

Coach Alisa begins her 13th season at Saint Mary’s as Head Coach for the varsity cross country and track & field teams. Alisa is a community volunteer in the health and fitness arena with a career foundation in education and public health. She has a passion for fitness and health that is evident in every aspect of her life.  Coach Alisa has worked with numerous Triangle organizations including the Triangle Aquatics Center, the Cary Family YMCA, Cary Academy, AARP of North Carolina, Lochmere Swim & Tennis, the Cary Chamber, Carolina RailHawks, Saint Mary’s School and the Cary Community Foundation. Fit & Able Productions, Inc, a nonprofit company started by Coach Alisa 15 years ago, provides event and training programs designed to get people of all ages and skill levels up and moving.

Glen Wright Colopy | Assistant Varsity Cross Country

Coach Colopy began his fifth season as part of the SMS Cross Country program in the fall of 2012. He has been an athlete since his first 1/8 mile race at age three. He has a competitive running history with Cary Academy, the College of William & Mary and with the University of Oxford in the UK. He has coached many triathlon camps and teams for both novice and competitive athletes, along with several running teams including the SMS Cross Country and Track.

Travis Wright Colopy | Assistant Varsity Track & Field

Travis has participated in many running, swimming and triathlon events since he was a kid. While a student at Cary Academy, Travis was on the cross country, track & field, and swim teams. Travis also did crew while attending the College of William & Mary. He went on to attend law school at Case Western Reserve. It was during his Cary Academy years that Travis began coaching triathlon, swimming and running programs with Fit & Able, the Cary YMCA, Lochmere Swim Club, and Impact Athletics. Travis has a keen awareness of the importance of a dedicated and understanding coach and is looking forward to the opportunity to be a part of the SMS Program.

Jim Freeman | Head Varsity Volleyball, Head JV Volleyball

Coach Freeman has coached in the Triangle Volleyball Club for seven years and his 20-year high school coaching record stands at 438-125 (.778), including one year at Friendship Christian School and 19 seasons (1991-2010) at Cardinal Gibbons High School. While at Cardinal Gibbons, he led the Crusaders to ten state championships, including six North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) titles and four North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) titles. From 1998-2009, Freeman’s Crusaders earned 12 consecutive state final appearances and 12 straight conference championships. The Alabama native, who was raised in the Pittsburgh area, has a long history of helping girls achieve their athletic potential. At one time, Freeman coached a squad with nine future Division I players on its roster, and he has coached over 30 Division I players that have gone on to attend colleges such as Penn State, UCLA, Duke, Stanford, UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, LSU and N.C. State, among others.  He was also assistant director of athletics at Cardinal Gibbons and coached the varsity baseball team to three conference championships from 1992-1997 and was assistant varsity girls basketball coach from 1997-2005 as the Lady Crusaders claimed four conference championships. Freeman also has college coaching experience, including a season as head volleyball coach for Barton College women’s program and one season as assistant coach for the Duke University women’s team. Coach Freeman is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Jimmy Hamilton | Head Varsity Golf, Head JV Golf

This is Jimmy’s ninth season as head of the Saints golf program. He is a 1978 graduate of the University Of Maryland and was co-captain of the golf team his junior and senior year. Jimmy is a 30 year class A member of the PGA of America. He has given over 25,000 golf lessons in his career and is currently on the teaching staff at the John Budwine Golf Academy at Wildwood Green Golf Club in Raleigh. As a competitor Jimmy has won numerous Carolinas PGA section events, has played in the Greensboro PGA Tour event 3 times, making the cut in 1991, and most recently finished tied for 8th in the 2009 PGA Senior Club Pro Championship which qualified him to play in the 2010 PGA Senior Championship in Denver, Colorado. Jimmy is very proud of the Saints Golf program and its development over the years to a point where the program is very competitive on the state level, yet fun is always the emphasis.

Tara Hart | Head Varsity Lacrosse, Assistant JV & Varsity Field Hockey

Coach Tara is returning this spring for her second year as the varsity lacrosse head coach.  Tara played Division III lacrosse at Washington College, graduating in 2010 with a degree in Human Development and Elementary Education.  While at Washington College, she played the position of keeper for the Shorewomen and served as team captain her senior year.  Tara coached with the Shoreshot Lacrosse Club for three years while in college. This past fall, Tara joined the field hockey coaching staff as assistant coach, helping with the defense and keepers.  She is currently involved in the Camp Seafarer community having worked at the camp for the past six years.  Tara resides on the SMS campus in Cruikshank Hall as a resident faculty and is currently working towards her nursing degree. 

Celeste Holder | Assistant Varsity Track & Field

This is Celeste’s second year with the Saints track team. Celeste moved to the triangle area in 2011 after graduating from Northeastern University in Boston. While a student at NU, Celeste earned numerous accolades as a sprinter and jumper. Celeste is from Parsippany, N.J.

Porschia Holmes | Assistant Varsity Basketball, Assistant Varsity Softball

Porschia Holmes is a former point guard for North Carolina Central University, graduating in 2006 with a degree in Business Administration and a concentration in Computer Information Systems.  While at NCCU, Holmes led the team with an average of 7 assists per game, breaking the single season record with 182 assists. At the end of her college basketball career, Holmes played two years of semi-pro basketball with the USA Elite in Greensboro, NC, finishing as Region Champions each year. Holmes currently plays on the semi-professional women's football team, Carolina Phoenix.  When not on the basketball court or football field, Holmes enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Josette Huntress Holland | Assistant Varsity Softball

Dean Holland has coached both softball and basketball at the middle school and high school varsity levels since 1998. Josette has been on the SMS coaching staff since 2010. In high school, Josette was named all-state in basketball, softball and golf, and while attending Colby College, she was able to serve as the captain of both the basketball and softball teams.

Kelly Hughes | Assistant Varsity Track & Field

Kelly is currently a senior at NC State University, majoring in Secondary Mathematics Education and minoring in Coaching. Kelly got her start in athletics at the age of four when she began participating in dance, gymnastics, and softball. She began playing volleyball in the 7th grade and started running track and field in the 10th grade. While at Orange High School, Kelly was a four year varsity starter on the volleyball team and a three year starter and captain in both indoor and outdoor track. She also participated in travel/club volleyball for five years with DOVE. During her sophomore year at NC State, Kelly started for the club volleyball team. Kelly’s coaching experience includes serving as a counselor at a volleyball camp; coaching a 14-15 year old girls volleyball travel team while in high school; and, serving as an assistant coach for an introductory volleyball class at NC State. Outside of coaching, Kelly enjoys playing with her two dogs, spending time with family and friends, reading, doing cross fit, and relaxing.

Ashley Kintzing | Assistant Varsity Field Hockey

Coach Ashley began her first season at Saint Mary's School this fall. As a student at William and Mary, Ashley appeared in 36 career games and was named to the NFHCA All-Academic Team in 2008 and 2009. At Great Bridge High School, Ashley earned all-district honors for all four years, all-region as a senior, and was named a two-time team MVP. Selected to compete in the AAU Junior Olympics in 2006, Ashley won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2007 and participated in Futures (2005-07), National Futures (2005-07), the National Field Hockey Festival (2005-07) and the National Indoor Tournament (2006, 2008). Ashely has also played club field hockey for Tidewater Storm and Beach Premier. She has coached for the Colonial Field Hockey and Focus Field Hockey clubs, along with summer camps held at the College of William and Mary and James Madison University.

Sarah Kunz | Head Varsity Swimming

Sarah Kunz began her SMS coaching career in October 2010. Kunz joined her first swim team at age five and has been swimming ever since. She attended high school in Columbus, Ohio, where she was a member of the water polo and year round swim team at Upper Arlington High School. She was captain of both sports her senior year. Her main swimming event was the sprint freestyle. Kunz was part of four State Championships and was named a three-time All-American. After high school, she accepted a swimming scholarship to swim at the University of Kentucky. Due to a long battle with shoulder injuries, she retired from swimming after her freshman year. Upon ending her swimming career in 2005, Kunz became the Assistant Coach at the Beaumont YMCA in Lexington, Kentucky where she coached 135 swimmers, ages four to eighteen. Outside of practice, Kunz spent many hours teaching private swim lessons. During Kunz’s coaching career at Beaumont YMCA, the team won two State Championships.  While residing on the West coast, Kunz became very involved in US Masters swimming. She competed in meets and open water swims, including placing third in a 1.5-mile swim at Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay.

Jim Lavery | Head Varsity Soccer

Jim Lavery is a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) licensed coach and referee.  He will be starting his eighth season with the Saints as head coach of the varsity soccer team this spring. His teams have made four North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) state tournament appearances, reaching the semifinals twice. They have also won two Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference (TISAC) championships. Forty of Coach Lavery’s players have received all-conference honors, and ten players have received all-state honors. Jim has been voted TISAC Coach of the Year twice and all-region coach of the year once. Jim has also coached with Next Level Academy for 10 years, and 17 years at CASL. While coaching for CASL, his teams won eight State Cup championships and were ranked nationally as high as number two.

Mary Lyons | Head JV Field Hockey

Fall 2012 marked coach Mary Lyons' fourth year at SMS. Mary Lyons began playing field hockey in the 5th grade.  She transferred to Virginia Episcopal School as a sophomore and went on to serve as captain of the field hockey team her senior year.  She was named an LIS player and asked to play at Randolph Macon, but chose to attend the Universityof Mississippi.  A fitness enthusiast, Mary Lyons enjoys working out and stays involved within the community through her membership with the Junior League of Raleigh. She also serves as president for both her high school class at Virginia Episcopal School and the University of Mississippi Raleigh Alumni Association.  Mary Lyons works for the A.E. Finley YMCA.

Jamie Notarainni | Head JV Tennis, Assistant Varsity Tennis

Coach Jamie begins her third season at Saint Mary's School this year as the Head JV Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach. Her tennis career started seven years ago at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center where she continues to coach and assist in program operations. In 2010, Jamie began working with the Town of Garner as their head tennis pro. Jamie also works with the Saint Mary's School Summer Tennis Camp program.

Megan Powell | Assistant Varsity Lacrosse

Megan is a student at NC State University, having transferred from Clemson University where she played on the varsity travel lacrosse roster. Megan played midfield on the varsity lacrosse team all four years of high school, being named team captain two years and starting every game. Her high school honors include – Lake Norman Player of the Year; All-Lake Norman girls’ team; Charlotte Observer Top Performer; Charlotte All-Star; and, being selected to play in the North vs. South Top 50 Game. Megan’s coaching experience includes a middle school girl’s lacrosse team and a few running clinics. Megan is currently working on a degree in Business Administration – Marketing, with a minor in Religious Studies.

Stacy Seehafer | Head Varsity Softball, Assistant Varsity Basketball

This is Stacy Seehafer's second year as softball coach at Saint Mary's and her first as assistant varsity basketball coach. Stacy moved to Raleigh two years ago from Wisconsin where she started all four years as the third basemen for Lakeland College. Stacy graduated from Lakeland with a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management and Communications. After college, Stacy went on to coach at a Division 1 High School softball program for 3 years before moving on to coaching a club team. When not coaching basketball or softball, Stacy enjoys running, golfing, cheering on the Wisconsin Badgers, and spending time with her husband Jason and their two yellow labs.

Dick Wagner | Head JV Basketball, Assistant Varsity Track & Field

Dick Wagner is a retired Physical Education teacher and coach from Montgomery County in Maryland.  He has coached cross country, basketball, and track and field for over thirty years, including time at Cary Academy as a basketball coach and track and field coach.

Macky Wingo ’08HS | Assistant Varsity Soccer

Macky started playing soccer at age 5. While playing on the CASL club team, Macky’s team earned two North Carolina State titles and two Region III Premier League Championships. Other youth accolades include being a five year member of the Region III Olympic Development Program team; winning the Golden Boot award for leading goal scorer at the 2007 U.S. National Camp; and, being named a two-time member of the USL Super-Y League National Select team. A graduate of Saint Mary’s School, Macky finished her high school career with a school-record 79 goals and 43 assists. She graduated from UNC Charlotte in 2012 with a BS in Exercise Science. While at UNC Charlotte, Macky played soccer all 4 years, being named team captain her senior year and earning a spot on the A-10 All-Tournament team after setting a league tournament single-game goal record. Also while at UNC Charlotte, Macky was named NSCAA National Player of the Week and A-10 Player of the Week multiple times as well as earning TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Team of the Week honors. Macky is ranked 10th among all time goals scored at Charlotte. She currently plays with the Charlotte Lady Eagles pro-am team and works as a personal trainer. Macky also has a business doing lighting design.

Holly Yuhase | Head Varsity Field Hockey

Coach Holly is a graduate of Radford University where, as a senior, she led the university’s Division I team in defensive saves and was one of the team’s top scorers. She played captain on both offense and defense, and was named to the NFHCA All-Academic Squad each of her four years in college. Holly began playing field hockey as a high school freshman at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick, MD, where she earned All-State Honorable Mention, All-Conference, All-District and Co-Player of the Year honors. In the off-seasons from school competition, she was a member of the MYFHA Spitfire Club and participated in the USFHA Futures Olympic Development Team. She also competed in the Futures regional tournaments, the National Field Hockey Festival and the National Indoor Tournament. For the past few years, Coach Holly has been able to work as an assistant coach on various teams in Maryland and North Carolina under the tutelage of her mother, Bridget LoJacono, who is currently the head varsity field hockey coach at Arendell Parrott Academy in Kinston. She has also directed the Calvert County Parks and Recreation summer field hockey camp in Maryland.
