Learning a language, exploring the world

Learning a world language at Saint Mary’s School is more than just learning to communicate with a new vocabulary—it is about opening a door to another world and creating links between our students and the cultures our faculty represent and teach. In and out of the classroom, the world languages program at Saint Mary’s emphasizes the five standard “C’s” of language instruction: Community, Communication, Culture, Connection, and Comparison.

Growing leaders in and out of the classroom

Helping girls grow as leaders is an integral part of a Saint Mary’s School education. Whether it’s serving as a class officer, leading a study group, captaining a sports team, chairing a committee or directing a class activity, Saint Mary’s students learn to lead in and out of the classroom. This commitment to leadership education includes training the Student Government Association and giving them the opportunity to initiate and lead activities and events on campus. Every day students engage in skill building as they collaborate on projects in class, organize study groups, and work together as part of a dynamic day and boarding school community.

The college search: more than completing applications

This time of year, the Saint Mary's School college counseling calendar always presents an interesting contrast as our seniors make the decision about which college they will attend; and juniors are analyzing information gathered during spring break and the COMPASS Week college visits. Seniors can bask in the realization that their hard work and dedication have been worthwhile as juniors simultaneously wonder if they will ever share that feeling. Our 58 seniors submitted close to 400 applications with 131 institutions with an average number of applications in the 6-7 range. At this writing, 24% of the seniors have been admitted by every institution to which they applied and 83% have been admitted by at least half of the institutions to which they applied.

COMPASS Week 2013 - Education for life

In keeping with Saint Mary’s mission and core values, which prepare girls for college and life, the school’s COMPASS life skills curriculum challenges girls to embrace the habits of lifelong learning, not only in the classroom, but in all aspects of life at school and beyond the school’s gates. Each spring, the culmination of the year-long life skills program is COMPASS Week, which takes girls off campus and out of their comfort zones to participate in grade-level, age-appropriate activities and adventures that broaden their life experiences and perspectives.

COMPASS Week 2013 concludes today with students returning from an exciting variety of life-changing adventures and eye-opening experiences.

A Holy Week Homily from Chaplain Bonner-Stewart

On Tuesday, March 26, the Saint Mary’s School community gathered in Chapel to celebrate Holy Week and the coming of Easter. The homily was delivered by Saint Mary’s School Chaplain Ann Bonner-Stewart, who spoke about how we may often find “good” in what may at first appear to be “bad.” The following is an excerpted recounting of Chaplain Bonner-Stewart’s homily: Once there was an old man, known from being wise and kind. One day, his horse ran away. His neighbors pitied him. However, the man said, “Who is to say that this is a bad thing?” Months later, not only did the man’s horse come back home, the man’s horse brought another horse back with him, a beautiful stallion. His neighbors envied his good fortune. However, the man said, “Who is to say that this is a good thing?” The man’s grandson loved the new horse and started riding the horse daily. The grandson fell off the horse, injuring his hip so that it never healed properly. His neighbors pitied him. However, the man said, “Who is to say that this is a bad thing?” Months later, the country went to war. The grandson could not go, because of his hip. His life was spared. This old Chinese story is meant to illustrate an old Buddhist saying: “Who can say what is good or bad?” (Fu, Ping. Bend, Not Break.)

Anchored in Tradition leaves a wake of success

This year’s nautically-themed auction gala, Anchored in Tradition, sailed into the sunset on March 1, leaving in its a wake a successful fundraising experience. While enjoying hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, a sit-down dinner and performance by Saint Mary's own a capella group, Ladies in Blue, guests managed to bid on silent and live auction items, reeling in a net of $185,000 in support of Saint Mary's School. This amount represents the second greatest revenue generated from an auction in Saint Mary's history, and brings the 13-year auction total for dollars raised to $1.5 million.
