Chorale

The Chorale, an academic program, consists of students in all grades who work together under the direction of the Chorale instructor. They perform throughout the year at various school and community functions. Junior and senior members of Chorale may try out for the school’s a capella group, the Ladies in Blue.

Club de Espanol (Spanish Club)

This group promotes cultural awareness of Spanish among the organization and campus. It is open to all interested students.

Cooking Club

The Cooking Club is open to all interested students. Members will explore the nature of cooking with hands on experiences. They will learn some vocabulary, how to work different appliances, and how to read and prepare a recipe.

Drama Club
-
The Drama Club is open to all interested students. Members will become engaged in all areas of a drama production including but not limited to stage crew, lights, costume, acting, producing and advertising. The Drama Club presents two performances a year, participates in community service projects and attends area theatre productions.

ECHO
-
The Echo is a senior singing group/washtub band/school spirit club whose purpose is to add school spirit and entertainment to campus and alumnae events through musical performance. The purpose of The Echo is to be leaders of school spirit and have that spirit echo and reverberate through the entire school. The Echo takes its name from the line in the Saint Mary’s school song that says “Hear the echoes of the music rising soft and clear,” and serves as a symbolic “echo” of the Saint Mary’s College Cold Cuts.

Economics Club

Members will learn about macroeconomic, finance and business; educate members of the SMS community regarding world-economic issues; study and read the Economist and Business week.

Environmental Club
-
The Environmental Club educates all members on the importance of being environmentally conscious. The club also takes part in the activities in the Raleigh community. The Club makes a difference in everyday life at Saint Mary’s School by providing the proper lifestyle (recycling and using renewable resources) to allow Saint Mary’s School to be an active school environmentally. The members make weekly announcements during assembly and educate via tips in the Buzz.

Film Club
-
The mission of the Film Club is to expose students to various types of films and genres. Members will meet monthly to watch a movie or documentary together. After each viewing, there will be a brief discussion about the movie. In this discussion, members will give feedback on the film. Information about the director, actors, music heard in the film and specific information on genre will be given to the members, along with a list of movies that belong in that particular genre. The Club will also encourage non- members to come watch the films so the club can expose as many people in the community to new films as possible, but only members will be required to stay for the discussion afterwards.

FOCUS (Fellowship of Christians in Universities and Schools)

Students interested in FOCUS attend weekly bible-study, monthly luncheons that include program and area FOCUS activities as able.

Membership is open to all students interested in learning about French people, language and culture.

Granddaughters Club

The Granddaughters Club is the oldest active club on campus, founded in 1909. The Granddaughters Club hosts events during Founders Week, invites alumnae mothers and grandmothers to campus each year for a luncheon, and supports the festivities during Lighting O’ The Grove. Membership in to the GDC is based on student being a “direct” descendant of a Saint Mary’s alumna (mother, grandmother, great grandmother, etc.).

Junior Classical League (Latin Club)

The purpose of this organization is to promote a more thorough knowledge of classical life, history and literature among its members and the Saint Mary’s community. Members of the organization pattern their citizenship in respect to family, school and nation after the best examples of the classical civilizations. The Club hosts Rome Day in the spring.

Ladies in Blue

Saint Mary’s School’s a cappella group, the student run organization operates under the auspices of the Visual and Performing Arts Department of SMS and works in connection with the School's music program. An auditioned group, students must have superior musical aptitude to be a member. They perform throughout the year at various school and community functions.

Model United Nations

The purpose of the Model United Nations Club is to represent Saint Mary’s School at Model UN conferences held by colleges and universities. Members of the club attending the conferences will represent countries from the United Nations to debate and resolve current international issues with other member nations who come from other schools.

National Honor Society
-
In 1921, the National Honor Society was founded to “honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.” Junior and Senior students at SMS with a cumulative weighted G.P.A. of 3.700 or higher or a cumulative weighted G.P.A. of 4.000 or higher are eligible to be invited to join the National Honor Society. A faculty council of veteran SMS teachers evaluates each eligible candidate. An induction ceremony is held each year.

Orchesis
-
This organization is open to all students with a special interest in dance, may require tryouts. The Greek word "Orchesis" means "art of dance." In 1938, Director of physical education and dance instructor, Jane Goss, followed a model she had learned in 1918 from her instructor, Margaret H'Doubler of the University of Wisconsin. Saint Mary's led the way as one of the first institutions in the state to teach modern dance. Orchesis and Orchesis Apprentice give any student with dance experience the opportunity to perform. Orchesis Dance Theatre is a student dance company dedicated to exploring the possibilities dance holds for human creativity and expression. It is open to all qualified members of the Saint Mary's School's community who respect and love the art form of dance in its entirety. Members must be willing and able to commit the time and energy required for the process of creating and performing dance. The company strives to be an ambassador to the Arts and to protect the cultural and creative aspects of dance, within Orchesis itself and the community at large.

Photography Club

The photography club of Saint Mary’s School is open to any student interested in photography, cameras or art in general. The photography club hopes to provide an opportunity for members and the school community to learn about photography, dark room use and cameras; an opportunity to go on field trips that provide chances to take pictures and use cameras; and an opportunity to attend photography exhibits to see and experience the art form.

Poetry Appreciation Club

The Poetry Appreciation Club gets together weekly to take time to relax and reflect on works of art that strike interest to them. Our meetings are time to fully appreciate poetry and other works of art, for example music or short stories or any personal tales or culture, outside the class room.

Quiz Bowl Team
-
A competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for which players attend periodic practices and then represent their school at varsity tournaments. Those tournaments may be based on the school's athletic conference, school district, county or state. Quiz bowl questions range over the entire spectrum of a high school curriculum and also include a certain amount of current events, sports and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas. Quiz bowl can reinforce classroom lessons and also encourage players to go beyond their assignments to master other areas as well.

Science Olympiad Team

The Science Olympiad is a competition that consists of individual and team events. The events focus on a variety of science topics including biology, physics, chemistry, earth science and more. Events require members to build things, apply knowledge, solveaproblem or recall factual information.

Sigma Mu Societies
-
Every student, faculty and staff member are assigned a team, either Sigma or Mu. Students whose mothers grandmothers attended SMS are assigned to that same team. The Sigma Mu Council creates numerous intramural opportunities each year such as: Field Day, Faculty/Staff vs. Student Olympic-style competitions during spring fling, and dodge ball, to name a few. The Sigma Mu council partners with the Vestry and the Community Service committee to create opportunity for friendly competitions as we serve others. The Sigma Mu council also strives to encourage greater participation at all events on campus.

Sportswoman’s Club

The Sportswoman’s Club is for any student interested in the outdoors. Group outings consist of skeet shooting and/or hunting, participation in spring fling, educational opportunities to learn more about preservation of wildlife and the environment.

Student Ambassadors

The Student Ambassadors assist the Admission Office throughout the year by providing campus tours for prospective students and their families, making calls to newly accepted students, and hosting prospective students during the school day. The Student Ambassadors are trained by the Admission Office.

Student Library Council

The purpose of the Student Library Council is to promote and encourage interest in and support for the Kenan Library program, resources, facility and staff at Saint Mary’s School. Joining the Student Library Council is a great way to join in on the fun events, get an idea of what it’s like to work in a library, and get to know the Library and Library staff better. Members can work as peer teachers, promote library resources through creative activities, and enable the library staff to expand services by assisting with projects that make resources more readily accessible. In the process the members of the Student Library Council can hone their critical thinking and communication skills and the media center can benefit from the expanded services.

Technology Student Association (TSA)

This club is part of the national organization whose mission statement reads: The Technology Student Association fosters personal growth, leadership, and opportunities in technology, innovation, design, and engineering. Members apply and integrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts through co-curricular activities, competitive events and related programs. The organization is one that not only fosters a growth in our understanding of technology but also opens our eyes to debate, photography, film, speeches, technology bowl (quiz bowl for technology), creating music, and even just plain leadership skills.

The Belles

Students interested in this publication should seek out an English Faculty member. The Belles is distributed throughout the community several times a year. This publication includes Q&A with the Head of School, profiles on teachers, latest cultural news (music, theatre, art), and stories about campus life. Members create the layout, determine articles, write articles and take photographs for this electronic publication.

The Muse

Each spring the collection of submitted prose, artwork, short stories, poems and photography are published in The Muse. The faculty in the English Department oversee the creation of this literary publication.

Visual and Performing Arts Club

The Visual and Performing Arts Club is open to all students interested in a variety of visual and performing arts – music, dance, theatre or art. The Club supports the Visual and Performing Arts Department and all the various performances during the school year. Outings to various local performances are scheduled during the year.
