Posted June 18, 2012
Before they skipped out for summer vacation, we took some time to get to know the newly elected members of the 2012-13 Student Government Association (SGA). Each week, we will introduce one member and share their thoughts on all things Saint Mary's. First up, Megan Carley, from Raleigh, NC, who will serve as the Day Life Representative.

YOUR SMS EXPERIENCE
What is your favorite SMS tradition?
Lighting O’ the Grove (or LOG as we call it at SMS)
What has been your favorite class in the last three years? Why?
Honors Pre-Calculus sophomore year. At first I was really scared and intimidated of Ms. Cadilla but now she is one of my favorite teachers. The class was really challenging but I survived!
What class has been the most challenging class thus far? How did you survive?
AP Chemistry was extremely challenging. Luckily, I had a great class with older girls who were ALWAYS willing to help me. I have never laughed so much in a class. AP Chemistry really challenged me but I found out what I was made of!
Why did you come to SMS?
Originally I came to SMS because my friends were all coming here. This is usually not a smart move but it ended up being the perfect choice for me.
What is your leadership style?
Inclusive. Everyone is a leader in their own way and everyone has amazing ideas to contribute to help improve SMS. I also think I’m a fun leader - I always want people to be smiling and having fun!
What are you most looking forward to as a member of SGA?
I like the first assembly of the school year where SGA usually puts on a skit to introduce themselves and it’s the first time in the year where everyone sings the school song and chant.
What are you most looking forward as a senior?
THE RAVE! The rave has always been one of my favorite activities at school. I love how crazy everyone dresses and all of the dancing. I get such a good workout from dancing like crazy but there are always doughnuts to replenish my energy at the end.
A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOU
What are your favorite OTG (outside the gates) spots for:
-
Lunch
Simply Crepes. It’s in north Raleigh but the food is so good that it’s worth the drive! -
Shopping
Revolver. Revolver is a high-end consignment shop that is really close to school. You can find anything you need here. -
Fun/Other
My friends' homes. I love being so close to people that I can go over to their house and the whole family greets me like I’m family.
What is your favorite movie – new or old?
Sixteen Candles
What is usually in your Hulu queue?
New Girl, Vampire Diaries, Swamp People
What song/album did you most recently purchase on iTunes?
My Maria by Brooks and Dunn
What are you reading now (book, blog, magazine)?
To Kill a Mockingbird...again!
ADVICE TO NEW STUDENTS
What advice would you give to a new incoming student?
Take advantage of everything SMS has to offer. We are so blessed to be able to attend SMS its only right that we try to get involved in everything. But also balance is key, don’t stretch yourself too thin.
What do you wish you had done sooner?
I wish I had spent more time on campus freshman year. There is always something to do here and I love all of the boarders.
