Meet the SGA: Mary Gordon Utt, Chief Marshall

Before they skipped out for summer vacation, we took some time to get to know the newly elected members of the 2012-13 Student Government Association (SGA). Each week, we will introduce one member and share their thoughts on all things Saint Mary's. This week, Mary Gordon Utt, from Raleigh, NC, who will serve as the Chief Marshall.

What activities have you been consistently or actively involved in at SMS?
Varsity Tennis, Community Service Committee, Vestry, FOCUS (Fellowship of Christians in Universities and Schools)
YOUR SMS EXPERIENCE
What is your favorite SMS tradition?
Graduation
What has been your favorite class in the last three years? Why?
AP US History - I learned so much and found out about my love for history! I loved Ms. Fluhrer who took us on an educational trip to Charleston, SC. I'm already looking forward to Washington D.C. with her next year!
What class has been the most challenging class thus far? How did you survive?
AP US History - I have never experienced so much work! I studied on the weekends a ton and found helpful study books.
Why did you come to SMS?
I had always looked up to SMS girls. I loved the all-girls atmosphere because it reminded me of Camp Seafarer. I loved the idea of meeting friends from all different areas and I thought it was just plain cool!
What are you most looking forward to as a member of SGA?
Making decisions and planning events for the school. I am looking forward to leading my school that I love. I am looking forward to hearing all the fun ideas and getting to be close friends with the other members of the SGA.
What are you most looking forward to as a senior?
Leading the school and experiencing all the fun senior traditions. I know it’s going to fly by so I am going to take time to enjoy each day!

ADVICE TO NEW STUDENTS
What advice would you give to a new incoming student?
You will love SMS and SMS will love you! Get involved as quick as you can. Embrace the school! There are so many great opportunities. The community is close knit and so loving and welcoming. Meet new friends because they will be friends for a lifetime!
