Meet the SGA: Alex Mahoney, Executive President

Posted August 6, 2012

Before they skipped out for summer vacation, we took some time to get to know the newly elected members of the 2012-13 Student Government Association (SGA). Each week, we have introduced new members and shared their thoughts on all things Saint Mary's. This week, we wrap up with Alex Mahoney, from Raleigh, NC, who will serve as Executive President.

THE BASICS

SGA (Secretary/Treasurer of Sophomore and Junior Classes), Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Student Ambassador, Model UN

YOUR SMS EXPERIENCE

What is your favorite SMS tradition?
My favorite Saint Mary’s tradition is the junior ring ceremony. It is a special tradition that you look forward to beginning as a freshman. Then, once you have received your ring, it is a sign that you are truly an upperclasswoman and truly a Saint Mary’s girl. When you see older girls and women who have already graduated from Saint Mary’s wearing the ring, whether you know them or not, you have a special bond that no one else can describe - the ring ceremony begins this lifelong bond.

What has been your favorite class in the last three years? Why?
I know it sounds cliché but in my time here at Saint Mary’s I have not had one single favorite class. Each teacher is exceptional at Saint Mary’s and I have found great things in each and every class I have taken. I took a government class this year with Mr. Edmonds and we didn’t have a normal classroom setting. We sat around a table and had a discussion instead of a typical lecture class. I have also loved other types of classes like my English classes where we read and discuss books and their connections to our lives. Each class at Saint Mary’s is unique, and I could never choose one single one as a favorite!

What class has been the most challenging class thus far? How did you survive?
My most challenging class so far has been AP US History. There was so much to know for every test, and you had to know everything! However, I really liked the subject so it made it easier to do well in the class because I found an interest in what I was learning.

Why did you come to SMS?
Both of my parents went to single-sex high schools and believed that it was a great way to experience high school so I shadowed at Saint Mary’s and immediately loved the community and environment and the love that everyone here showed for their friends and their school.

What is your leadership style?
I don’t think I have a specific leadership style, but I love helping everyone get involved in things. I think that as leaders it is our job to make sure everyone is included and has as much fun as possible at everything we do!

What are you most looking forward to as a member of SGA?
I am looking forward to being able to use my ideas and energy to help shape the coming school year. I can’t wait to be able to have an influence on the school and have the ability to help every student make friendships and memories that will last much longer than the year will.

What are you most looking forward to as a senior?
As a senior I am looking forward to being a role model for the younger girls and being able to lead the school as I have seen many other seniors before me do. I want the younger girls who are new to Saint Mary’s to be able to learn about the school and get accustomed to the SMS community. I am also very excited about the privileges that come with senior year! We have waited for three years to be able to do things such as go off campus for lunch and the hard earned privileges are much anticipated!

ADVICE TO NEW STUDENTS

What advice would you give to a new incoming student?
One piece of advice to an incoming student is to get involved early in the year! Whether it be a sport pre-season like I did with field hockey, or participating in dance or theater early in the fall. Getting involved in the SMS community before the academic year begins makes it much easier to transition into classes. When you participate in orientation events on campus or pre-season, you are able to make friends a few days before school starts!
