Annual academic convocation kicks off 171st school year

Posted August 20, 2012

With opening weekend successfully completed, the annual all-school academic convocation kicked off the 171st academic year 8 a.m. on Monday, August 20, 2012. Led by the marshals, the senior class and the faculty processed into historic Pittman Auditorium, to the sounds of a trumpet and piano march. The annual opening convocation celebrates the start of the 2012-2013 academic year, honors our distinguished faculty and inspires all members of the school community as we begin the quest for academic and personal achievement through a love for learning and a zest for experiencing all Saint Mary’s has to offer.

After a prayer from Chaplain Bonner-Stewart, a welcome from Head of School Dr. Monica Gillespie and Dean Thomas Mueller's introductions of the 36 faculty and an explanation of their academic regalia, students heard insightful words from Instructor of Humanities and Social Sciences Matt Edmonds, winner of the 2012 John U. Tate Joy of Teaching award. Mr. Edmonds offered a compelling perspective on the role of failure in the course of our pursuit of success. Dean Mueller gave closing remarks and ended the morning ceremony by sending students and faculty forth to begin the academic year.
