Parents Day 2012

Posted September 21, 2012

On October 4 and 5, the gates of the Saint Mary’s School will open wide to welcome several hundred parents for our annual Parents Day. A wonderful opportunity for parents to sneak a peek into their daughter’s school life, Parents Day has been celebrated at Saint Mary’s, in one form or another, since the mid-1900s. Since 1977, when the Parents Association (PA) was established following a particularly successful parents’ weekend, the PA has provided the dinner that officially kicks off Parents Day festivities.

And this year is no different, as a wonderful dinner is planned on the terrace of Smedes Hall on Thursday night. But before dinner, please join our new head of school, Dr. Monica Gillespie, and her husband John Gillespie, as they host a cocktail reception in their home on campus.

On Friday, students get the chance to take their parents to abbreviated classes to meet teachers, friends and other SMS parents. It’s an informative experience for parents as they get a good taste of what life is like for their daughter at Saint Mary’s. There are also opportunities for parents to watch their daughters in action on the athletic field, on the courts, on stage or in the art studio.

Please click here to view the official schedule for Parents Day activities, and be sure to RSVP by Monday, October 1 if you plan to attend any part of Parents Day. Although we pack a lot of activity into a short amount of time, we hope parents are able to experience SMS life through the eyes of their daughters.

Once students have completed all of their academic responsibilities, parents may take their daughter home to begin fall break! This is our first break of the year during which the dorms close. Dorms will close at 5 p.m. on October 5 and reopen at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9. Boarding students should be back on campus by 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Classes resume on Wednesday, October 10 at 8 a.m.
