Catherine Blair '13 signs letter of intent with Duke soccer

Saint Mary’s School senior Catherine Blair of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play soccer at Duke University, where she will enroll as a freshman in the fall of 2013. Miss Blair, the daughter of Mary and Bill Blair of Wrightsville Beach, signed her NLI in a ceremony held at 6 p.m., Feb. 6, in Chan-Poyner Hall at Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, where she is a member of the Class of 2013.

Miss Blair, a center midfielder, was the leader in goals and assists for the Saint Mary’s varsity soccer team in 2011 and 2012 and has served as captain and been named MVP of the school’s soccer team for the past two seasons. She was named to the Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference (TISAC) all-conference team (2009-2012); the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) all-region team (2010-2012); and the NCISAA all-state team (2011, 2012). She received the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) Hamilton Sportsmanship Award in 2010; was co-captain of the CASL Elite Ladies in 2011 and 2012; and played on numerous championship club teams in CASL, USYS Region III, Disney Showcase, Jefferson Cup, GSA Adidas and more.

Blair is also the starting point guard and captain of the Saint Mary’s varsity basketball team, and she helped lead the team to the TISAC tournament championship in 2011. She has been named athlete of the year for each of her years at Saint Mary’s School.

At Saint Mary’s, Miss Blair is an honor roll student, a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society, co-captain of the Sigma-Mu intramural program, recipient of the Martha Sprouse Stoops Award for excellence in the study of Humanities and a prefect in the school’s residential life program, among other activities.

“There is no day more special to a student-athlete than reaching her goal of playing for a nationally recognized athletic program,” says Saint Mary’s soccer coach Jim Lavery. “Catherine Blair has sacrificed time with family and friends and fought through injuries and the demands of the game to be recognized as one of the premier players in the nation. Catherine’s determination and drive has rewarded her with selection to the Duke University women’s soccer team. Her sisters from the Saint Mary’s Soccer team, her coaches and athletic administrators, applaud her achievements and wish her the best in her endeavors at Duke University.”
