COMPASS Leadership Week 2017
Mary Virginia Swain '77C

Saint Mary's students venture beyond the gates this week, March 28-31, on a variety of meaningful grade-level experiences and adventures as part of COMPASS Leadership Week 2017.

COMPASS Leadership Week

COMPASS Leadership Week offers students meaningful experiences beyond Saint Mary's gates each spring. Students participate in grade-level activities matching their social, emotional, and age-appropriate needs.

Ninth Grade Outward Bound Experience

Ninth grade students will depart from the Grove, bright and early Tuesday morning, March 28, to take part in a four-day North Carolina Outward Bound experience in the mountains. During this technology-free week, students learn the importance of team work and adaptability. Leadership is in action as each girl takes part in navigation, meal preparation, or site clean-up to align with Outward Bound's "leave no trace" philosophy.

Tenth Grade Service-Learning Project

Tenth grade students will participate in a four-day service-learning project with the Raleigh Youth Mission, which uses art as a tool for meaning-making and debriefing, helping students express experiences and thoughts about diversity, privilege, ethics and values that are sometimes beyond words. A sample of community partners with whom the 10th graders volunteer includes Healing First, Interfaith Food Shuttle, Ruth Sheets Adult Day Care Center, Raleigh Rescue Mission, Wheels 4 Hope and Shepherd's Table.

Eleventh Grade College Visits

Eleventh grade students will spend COMPASS week visiting colleges with their families or through school-organized outings. This year, girls are visiting a wide array of campuses across North Carolina, including the UNC system campuses and private colleges and universities. Students will also visit locations beyond North Carolina, including, but not limited to, American University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, Boston College, Boston University, Brown University, Howard University, Northeastern University, Vanderbilt University, Sewanee, Rhodes College, Texas Christian University, Southern Methodist University, Rice University, Wofford College, College of Charleston, Furman, Clemson, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Georgia, the University of South Carolina, the University of Virginia, College of William and Mary, Dartmouth, Yale, and Washington and Lee University, Savannah College of Art and Design, Middlebury College, Skidmore College, Williams College, Northwestern University, Notre Dame University, University of Chicago, Wellesley College, Babson College, Tufts University, University of Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr College, University of Maryland, Georgia Tech, The Citadel, and Auburn University.

This year's school-sponsored outings include North Carolina State University, Elon University, Wake Forest University, Duke University, and UNC-Chapel Hill.

Students will process their visits upon returning to campus through one-on-one college counseling appointments.

Senior Internships

Twelfth graders will spend COMPASS Week completing their senior internship. The Saint Mary's School Senior Internship Experience is an integral component of our innovative four-year COMPASS Leadership Development curriculum. This unique interning opportunity focuses on increasing independence through a concentrated, week-long, career immersion experience. The Senior Internship Experience allows seniors to explore career interests and observe a professional setting, all while enhancing personal growth.

Saint Mary's wishes everyone safe travels, meaningful and fun experiences and adventures, and a spirit of renewal and rejuvenation during COMPASS Leadership Week 2017!
