Compass Week 2018
Mary Virginia Swain '77C

Compass Leadership Week underway at Saint Mary's School, offering students meaningful off-campus learning experiences engaging students in grade-level activities matching their social, emotional, and age-appropriate needs.

Ninth Grade Outward Bound Experience

Ninth grade students will depart from the Grove, bright and early Tuesday morning, April 3, to take part in a four-day North Carolina Outward Bound experience in the mountains. During this technology-free week, students learn the importance of team work and adaptability. Leadership is in action as each girl takes part in navigation, meal preparation, or site clean-up to align with Outward Bound's "leave no trace" philosophy.

Tenth Grade Service-Learning Project

Tenth grade students will participate in a four-day service-learning project with the Raleigh Youth Mission, which uses art as a tool for meaning-making and debriefing, helping students express experiences and thoughts about diversity, privilege, ethics and values that are sometimes beyond words.

Eleventh Grade College Visits

Eleventh grade students will spend Compass Week visiting dozens of campuses around the country and abroad. The colleges and universities the students choose to visit reflect the diversity of their interests, and include several of the University of North Carolina system campuses, Davidson College, Wake Forest, High Point, Elon, University of Florida, Georgia Tech., Furman, Wofford, SMU, TCU, University of Texas, Washington & Lee, University of Virginia, University of Richmond, Georgetown, American University, George Washington University, Sewanee, Rhodes, Centre, Boston University, Emerson College, Boston College, Northeastern, Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon University, Brown University, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and University of Michigan.

Students process their visits upon return to campus through one-on-one college counseling appointments.

Senior Internships

Twelfth graders will spend Compass Leadership Week completing their senior internship. The Saint Mary's School Senior Internship Experience is an integral component of our innovative four-year Compass Leadership Development curriculum. This unique interning opportunity focuses on increasing independence through a concentrated, week-long, career immersion experience. The Senior Internship Experience allows seniors to explore career interests and observe a professional setting, all while enhancing personal growth. This year's internships include five international placements and 14 conducted out of the state of North Carolina.

Educational Travel

Saint Mary's is leading two educational travel experiences during Compass Week – service-learning trips to Ethiopia for 11th and 12th graders and to the Dominican Republic for 10th and 11th graders.

Saint Mary's wishes everyone safe travels, meaningful and fun experiences and adventures, and a spirit of renewal and rejuvenation during Spring Break and Compass Leadership Week 2018!
