Architect Richard Upjohn designed Saint Mary's Chapel in the Gothic Revival style in 1856. The chapel features a steep gable roof, an octagonal stained glass window, and a gabled entryway. In 1905, two transepts were added to the structure. Saint Mary's Chapel is a designated National Historic Site and a Raleigh Historic Property, available for rental for weddings and special services.
The chapel accommodates up to 250 guests, providing a warm and intimate setting for wedding ceremonies. Both alumnae and non-alumnae are eligible to be married at Saint Mary's Chapel, which is the sole on-campus facility available for weddings. Outdoor weddings are not permitted.
As the chapel is actively utilized by students, faculty, and staff, the scheduling of school events takes precedence. Rental dates are available during the academic year and summer months.
Saint Mary's does not provide clergy for wedding ceremonies; the bride must arrange for officiating clergy, and all denominations are welcome. The chapel offers a beautiful organ for wedding ceremonies, and other instruments, such as strings and brass, are also permitted. The bride is responsible for arranging an organist or other musicians. Saint Mary's School can provide contact information for organists interested in performing at weddings.
