About Mia '19

Favorite activities: Saint Mary's swim team and trap shooting club

Favorite class: Spanish "I love learning a foreign language and being opened up to another culture."

Favorite dining hall meal: Crispy chicken sandwiches

Favorite tradition: Saint Mary's 175th anniversary time capsule "It's not really a tradition, but I liked the time capsule we put together. Each grade created a video and signed a card introducing themselves. Can't wait to come back for the 200th anniversary and open the capsule."

“I like that the academic standards are really high at Saint Mary’s.” shared Mia, a day student from Raleigh.  “Classes are interactive and collaborative – I learn a lot more that way, like when my English and history classes collaborated on World War I – reading the literature in the context of the history was really interesting.”

Teachers working closely with each other and with their students is important to Mia.  “Because Saint Mary’s is a boarding school, even as a day student, I have access to teachers during evening study hall in the library or if I stay for dinner in the dining hall. The tutorial period is great, too. I can talk with my teachers before after-school activities start.”

And what does Mia think about the all-girl experience? “I thought I’d give it a try and I’ve loved it. With no boys in class, there are fewer distractions. Everyone’s more comfortable speaking up and there’s less drama. We all work better together and participate more.”

“Though it’s challenging – classes are really rigorous, you have time to expand on what you’re learning in class and do things on your own. It’s really rewarding,” adds Mia, who is looking forward to self-publishing a book she’s written with a fellow Saint Mary’s student. “My teachers encourage me to go as far as I want, and that means I’m able to grow and be more creative.”
