VIRTUAL LEARNING UPDATE JANUARY 2022

Saint Mary’s conducted a fully in-person fall 2021 semester, but will start 2022 with a virtual learning week, January 5-7, as the Omicron and Delta variants of COVID-19 are creating unprecedented numbers of cases locally, regionally and nationally. Saint Mary's has excelled at delivering virtual learning as necessary throughout this pandemic, and our faculty are preparing for a successful start to 2022 with an initial virtual period.

In order to start the 2022 year in the most healthy and responsible way, we are adjusting our reentry from Christmas Break as follows:

  • Saint Mary’s classes will be VIRTUAL on Wednesday, January 5 – Friday, January 7. No classes Tuesday, January 4. No athletics January 4-9.
  • Class start and end times will not change; Wednesday, January 5, is a “B Day.” Assembly will be Thursday and Chapel on Friday, both through Microsoft Teams.
  • Boarding students who are international and/or flying in may return to campus Monday, January 3. All other boarders should remain home and attend classes virtually.
  • All students will submit a negative COVID test to the Magnus site; tests should not be taken before Thursday, January 6.

We will use email as our communication on Friday, January 7, to share our plans going forward. This is outlined in this letter.

Thank you for working with us as we make adjustments to keep everyone healthy and safe.

Virtual Learning at Saint Mary's 2021-2022

Should there be a stay-at-home order or other circumstances related to COVID-19 necessitating the closure of Saint Mary’s campus for any length of time, the school will pivot and return to a virtual learning environment, as needed.

Saint Mary’s began the 2020-2021 school year with two weeks of virtual learning for all students before resuming in-person learning for most students from September 8- November 20. The school finished the fall term with a three week period of virtual learning for all students between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday breaks and one week in January 2021 before returning once again for in-person classes. We successfully remained in an on-campus, socially distanced, in-person learning environment for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, and plan to operate fully in-person for 2021-2022, as much as possible.

"I am so grateful for the administration, faculty, and staff of Saint Mary's during this pandemic. Your decisions are well researched, thought out, and regularly communicated. In these times of uncertainty, it is comforting to have institutions proceeding in ways that are adaptive yet true to the mission."
