Laura Grantmyre, Ph.D., started teaching in Saint Mary’s humanities and social sciences department in 2016 and served as a residential faculty member in Cruikshank Hall for two years. She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in history, suma cum laude, at the University of Pittsburgh and her B.A. in history, magna cum laude, at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Dr. Grantmyre has taught history at the Community College of Allegheny County, the University of Pittsburgh, and Point Park University.

Her interests include United States history; histories of gender, ethnicity, and race; African American cultural history; and visual culture.

My favorite things about working at Saint Mary’s are that the school encourages creativity and constant growth and it empowers young women,” says Dr. Grantmyre. “As a teacher, I can create and test new classroom activities and critically reflect on how to improve. This enlivens my curiosity and helps me evolve as a professional. It also shapes students’ experiences and expectations, teaching them to value growth instead of narrow definitions of success. I also love how young women are encouraged to take on leadership roles and prioritize cooperation, rather than competition, at Saint Mary’s.”
