Lauren Marquez, instructor of science, joined Saint Mary’s faculty in 2017. She holds a B.S. in biology and a B.A. in Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; an MAT in science education from the University of Southern California; and an M.Ed. in bilingual education from Universidad de Alcala de Henares in Madrid, Spain. She worked in Wake County Public Schools for three years and in Madrid, Spain, for the government in bilingual schools teaching both science and English.
Ms. Marquez loves to travel and has a goal to visit all seven continents. She has visited six and has one remaining - Australia. She thinks traveling opens us up to so many new experiences and gives us an insight into ourselves - it's an experience she hopes every girl can enjoy. One of her life mottos is that you should try anything at least twice - once for the experience and once again to start forming an opinion.
While stateside, Ms. Marquez and her husband greatly enjoy spoiling their two nieces and their nephew as frequently as possible. Avid college basketball fans, she and her husband enjoy attending UNC basketball games as often as possible.
Ms. Marquez also serves in an advisory role for one of the local chapters of her sorority and volunteer frequently with them for organizations including Reading is Fundamental and Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test.
“What I love about teaching at Saint Mary's is that we encourage the girls to really explore and learn about their role as participants, learners, and leaders in science,” says Ms. Marquez. “The exposure we give to the girls in all of the science disciplines allows them to develop lifelong skills and grow to be global citizens, not only observing the world around them but engaging with it.”
