Virginia Boyd, instructor of English, is a native North Carolinian and a graduate of Duke University. She began her first novel, One Fell Swoop, while earning a master’s degree in English at North Carolina State University, where she studied with Lee Smith. Ms. Boyd’s experience combines years of working as a professional writer and teaching in a variety of settings.  Of all the writers she’s worked with, teenagers and retirees are her favorite age groups. Both are on the cusp of new stages in their lives. These times of transition and transformation are fruitful ones for self-discovery and reflection. Ms. Boyd loves helping people discover the stories they want to tell and to find their voices as writers. She also loves working in a small community that has a long history, in a place where she really gets to know her students and colleagues and feels a part of a tradition of educating generations of young women, who have sought to better themselves and the world around them.
