Saint Mary’s welcomes 295 students to campus from around the region, the state, the nation, and the world for the 180th school year during Welcome Week 2021, August 19-27. It is a week of back-to-school excitement that featured move-in and registration days, orientation meetings, assemblies, social activities, athletics tryouts, and the start of classes.
Returning students were happy to return to campus and settle into campus life after summer vacation, and new students arrived eager to make new friends, meet their teachers and advisors, and begin their Saint Mary’s journey.
Orientation programming covered every aspect of school life, from academics to athletics to the arts to health and wellness to boarding and day student life and more.
Student activities included the Saints Soiree, the Aldert Smedes Classic, Sigma-Mu Field Day, leadership training, orientation sessions, opening assembly, dorm meetings, chapels, community dinners, snack parties, and more.
The opening academic convocation in Eliza Battle Pittman Auditorium, Wednesday, August 25, set the tone for a year of learning, growing, and exploring in the classrooms and beyond. Seniors marched into Pittman led by the marshals. Head of School Carol Killebrew welcomed the school community to the 180th year. The convocation concluded with the singing of our School Hymn. Speakers included Chaplain Maggie Stoddard, SGA President Tommi Wilder ’22, Board of Trustees Chair Liza Roberts, Chair of the Alumnae Leadership Council Ann Beland Brooks ’73C, and Parents Association President Maureen Wingfield. The School Hymn was sung, and Chief Marshal Jane Usher ’22 closed the convocation by ringing a bell to declare the 180th session at Saint Mary’s to be officially open.
A half day of classes kicked off the academic year on Wednesday, with the first full day of classes Friday, August 27.
"This year, our 180th, is shaping up to be a wonderful school year," says Interim Head of School Carol Killebrew. "I hope everyone will enjoy all that Saint Mary's has to offer and contribute to the special community we have here at 900 Hillsborough Street."
Get ready, Saint Mary’s, for a great year ahead!
