Saint Mary’s Seniors Named 2023 National Merit® Scholarship Program Semifinalists

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation® (NMSC) announced Sept. 14, 2022, the students who qualified as Semifinalists in the 68th annual National Merit® Scholarship Program.

Saint Mary’s School is pleased to announce that seniors Grace Sawyer ’23 and Isabel Yates ’23 have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors to receive this distinction. 

Grace Sawyer '23 is a day student from Cary, NC. In her time at Saint Mary's, she has been recognized for her thoughtful and intellectual pursuits: winner of the Non-Critical Essay Contest, the Trefoil Award for Knowledge, a Science Olympiad medal, and the Kenan Library Award. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. Grace enjoys leading the Folding for Fun (origami) Club and participating in the school's theatre productions. As an avid writer, she hopes to publish a collection of short stories in the future.

Isabel Yates '23 is a day student from Raleigh, NC. In her time at Saint Mary's, she has been recognized both for her intellectual curiosity and her passion for art: winner of Excellence in History, the Physical Sciences, Art, and the Trefoil Award for Knowledge. In addition, Isabel's writing has won the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Isabel serves as a Judicial Board Class Representative, Coordinator of Service and Peer Tutoring for the Saint Mary's chapter of the National Honor Society, and co-editor of the Belles (student newspaper). Outside of school, Isabel enjoys drinking tea and baking treats.

“Our students are EXTRAORDINARY in many ways at Saint Mary’s and this is an outstanding highlight of academic achievement,” shared Interim Head of School Adam Holden, Ed.D. “Congratulations to these students and best wishes to them as they continue to be BOLD and proceed through the rest of the competition.” 

Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million. National Merit Scholarship winners of 2023 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join nearly 368,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
