Audiences were enchanted and wowed by the performances of a cast of some 30 young actors in this rendition of this classic and beloved story of Mary Poppins and friends. From stellar performances by the leading players, who ranged from freshman to seniors, to the energetic singing and dancing by the ensemble cast, to the skilled crew and talented musicians, Mary Poppins was truly a show we will never forget.
Mary Poppins is a musical with music and lyrics by the Sherman brothers, Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, and additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, with a script by Julian Fellowes. The musical is based on the similarly titled Mary Poppins children's books by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film, and is a fusion of various elements from the two, including songs from the film.
Senior Gwyn Jones ’20, a veteran of the Pittman stage, delighted as the “practically perfect nanny,” Mary Poppins, whose last name alludes to her tendency to “pop in” and “pop out” of children's lives whenever she pleases. Matilda McCard ’21 played Bert, Mary’s jolly friend and a man of many interesting professions. A talented cast and crew of many rounded out the ensemble in this delightfully entertaining production which enjoyed successful runs on Broadway, the West End, and national tours. The show was directed by Saint Mary’s Instructor of Performing Arts and Theatre Director Michelle Murray Wells.
This was the first major theatre production in Pittman since the installation of a new state-of-the-art sound and light system funded by the most recent school auction gala, and what a difference it made!
Congratulations, to the cast, crew, musicians, and director Michelle Wells on creating the true magic of the theatre through this spectacular show! It was perfectly supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
