Senior spring athletes honored with virtual Senior Night

With the 2019-2020 school year winding down, we honor and celebrate our spring senior athletes on Saint Mary’s varsity lacrosse, soccer, softball, and track and field teams with a virtual Senior Night tribute at the end of a season cut dramatically short due to the COVID-19 situation. The 2020 spring season that barely was could be summed up as the thrill of victory followed by the agony of incomplete.

While there was great disappoint for the abrupt and unexpected cessation of the season after our teams came out of the gates strong and ready to compete, there is still much to celebrate about the accomplishments of our seniors over the past four years including exciting wins, strengthening of team traditions and programs, team bonds and friendships, personal bests, and even individual conference championships.

Four members of the Class of 2020 have committed to play in college, including Abby Arens, North Carolina State University swimming; Caroline Crouse, University of Pittsburgh swimming; Gracey Falk, Centre College lacrosse; and Claire Smith, Rhodes College lacrosse.

In a recent message to the athletes, Saint Mary’s Athletics Director Rob Weltz shared these thoughts with the senior student-athletes. “I hope you realize the incredible impact you have made in the hearts of our community. The sweat, the aches, the pains, the nerves, the sacrifices, the time. So much time – the weeks, the months, the years. I hope you know that we know how much you looked forward to these last months of your senior year. I hope you know that we know how much you miss being with your teammates, working out together, pushing each other, and encouraging each other to do one more sprint, to take one more shot, to get that one last win. I hope you know that we know how much being a role model for our underclasswomen meant to you. To the captains, we know how much you miss leading your team. I hope you will look back on these challenges and use them as inspiration for determination and a source of pride in and appreciation for this special place that is Saint Mary’s.”

The spring athletes of the Class of 2020 missed their traditional Senior Days and Nights in which they each have their senior moment to be introduced and honored on the field with their families or chosen friends by their side, but we hope they can somehow envision that special moment and feel the virtual appreciation their school, coaches, teammates, and friends feel for them.

Thank you, seniors, for your four outstanding years contributing to the excellence in Saints athletics. You are truly role models of the very best leadership, hard work, sportsmanship, and resilience.

For our athletes in grades 9-11, we can’t wait until next year! Go, Saints!
